ROCKY LANDSCAPES
ORADOUR SUR GLANE I know this isn't strictly in the region I am covering but this place is truly remarkable. Just after the D-Day landings revenge was taken by the Waffen SS on 10th June 1944 on this small town near Limoges. All inhabitants, including very young children were rounded up. The men were shot and well, the women and girls were subjected to terrible horrors and then all women and children were put in the church, which was then grenaded. The heat from the fire was so intense it melted the church bell which dropped to the floor, where it still lays. The youngest child was 20 months old. The remains of the pram lie by the altar, undisturbed since that fateful day. This town is now a memorial to all those who needlessly lost their lives. It is not a morbid, spooky place (well I didn't think so) but it is very very moving, especially the church. There is an underground museum close-by which is well worth a visit. Allow a good couple of hours to look around the town and museum. See their website at http://www.oradour.org
