TOWN MAP - INDRE (36) |
The Indre (department 36) in Centre region,
in the south of the Loire Valley, is named after its river. The area is
known for its beautiful landscape, the writer George Sand, (and her
association with Chopin) and its pyramid-shaped goats cheese.
The department covers
6 825 km² with its
highest point rising to 459 m at Colline de Fragne and has a population
of approximately 238,000.
The Indre is one of the very rural
departments of France with life being of a very unhurried nature.
Together with its neighbouring department Le Cher (18) they make what
was once the former province known as le Berry. Châteauroux
is its “Capital” and is almost at the centre of the department. It was
founded in 937 by Raoul de
Déols who built his castle on the left bank of the river
Indre – which meanders through
the department and out again to ultimately join the Loire.
The landscape is flatter in the north and
generally of rolling gently undulating hills, small fields with hedges
(but in the north they tend to be larger with less hedgerows). There are
plenty of forested areas and from the higher points it actually seems
that the whole countryside is covered in woodland. But there is also,
within the Indre, an entirely different landscape known as the Brenne –
the country of a thousand lakes - (and water-meadows), home to
thousands of wild-fowl birds, flora and fauna.
The department of l’Indre is simply full of
charm, mystery and surprises around every corner. There is an abundance
of châteaux, beautiful gardens, historical ruins, cathedrals and fine
churches, and even beaches – yes beaches – here in the centre of France;
there are a number of superb lakes offering swimming, watersports and
fishing facilities in the area, most of which also have cafés or
restaurants.
