THE GEOLOGY OF CENTRAL FRANCE

The four regions of Central France (Auvergne, Burgandy, the Loire River Valley and Limousin) have no border to a neighbouring country or to water and take up approximately 20% of the total area of France, but despite its size has only 9% of the total population living in its varied and beautiful countryside.

One of the most obvious geological regions within Central France is the Massif Central, which is about a half hour drive from Vesdun (well actually you are practically on the Massif Central there, but you need to drive south for a bit, to start “seeing” it for real).

Les Pierres-Jaumâtres near Boussac

This is a magical site between Toulx-Ste-Croix with its striking 11th Century church, and St-Sylvain-bas-le-roc.  It is a site of extraordinary rocky geology approached by a gentle hill climb.  No one knows why the rocks are there or how they got there name but strangely they have an association with King Arthur.
