Moulins,  Allier, Central France (dept 03)

Moulin is a town in the Allier that is full of charm. In L'Église du Sacré-Cœur de Moulins you will find la Vierge en bois du XV siécle - A Black Madonna of the 15th century.

A QUICK TRIP TO MOULINS

Moulins, Allier, Auvergne, France - L'Eglise du Sacre-Coeur from Place d'AllierMoulins is in the Allier department (03) in the region of the Auvergne - approx 2.5 hours south of Paris. It is situated on the picturesque river Allier and has a skyline dominated buy the twin spires of both the Cathedral and the Eglise du Sacre-Coeur.

It is quite a small with a population of approx 25,000. It is easy to navigate by car and well worth a visit.

I recently visited Moulins on a Sunday, around lunchtime. It was very easy to drive in to the centre and find a parking space (I will report back when I have re-visited on a working day!).

On this particular day I was doing a bit of a tour, so only stopped for a quick look round one of the churches (L'Église du Sacré-Coeur, just off Place d'Allier). Here you can see a black Madonna and child statue in wood from the 15th Century.

Moulins, Allier, Auvergne, FranceThen off I went in search of food. In the Place d'Allier there are one or two eating places - I went to "Le France" a pub-like restaurant, with a very reasonably priced menu of 13.50€ for a starter, main-course, cheese or pudding followed by coffee. Half litre of wine only 6.50€. It was a fast and friendly service and the food was very tasty.

Just along the pavement from here, however, is another place that I need to try on my next visit. It is called the Grand Café and has retained all of its Art Nouveau characteristics. This café (and its owner) has a couple of claims to fame - it was the first café in Moulins to install a telephone (becoming known as the Telephone Café and its owner Mr Renou was one of the first people to purchase a motor car, which he proudly parked outside and which drew in many visitors.

More coming as soon as I can make another visit......
