JENZAT

Jenzat is a picturesque village (small commune of about 500 inhabitants) north of and in the Canton of Gannat in the department of the Allier in the Auvergne Region of Central France. The beautiful river Sioule flows past the village and you will find a municipal campsite on its banks that is open from April 16th to September 16th each year. From the campsite there are several way-marked footpaths.

In the village Church there are some interesting wall paintings that date back to the 15th century. The church and the chateau are classified as historic monuments.

Hurdy-Gurdy Museum: Jenzat is world renowned for its vielles - hurdy-gurdys and in the 19th and 20th centuries it was Europe’s main centre for their manufacture -There is a museum here - "La Maison du Luthier Musée" - housed in the former home of the instrument-maker J.-A. Pajot (1845-1920). Here you can see collections of hurdy-gurdies and other musical instruments as well as makers tools. For those that want to study the history of this instrument and its players, this museum offers a great starting point. Open: June and September from 14:30 to 18:30 Sundays and Mondays. July and August from 14:30 to 18:30 Monday to Thursday. Groups by appointment.   Tel : 04-70-56-81-78. Lectures and guided tours available. More info see their website (in English)

Plant Festivals: Jenzat is home to two exceptional annual Plant Festivals - The Festival of Plants is held the first weekend of April and the Festival of Tress and Roses is held the second weekend in November. These festivals attract thousands of visitors of each of the weekend are are held in the grounds of the Chateau or in the Place of the Church and in the village streets.

Entrance to both festivals is 3€ per person over the age of 16. For the April event, this price also allows access to look around the chateau gardens, attend the lecture and also entry in to the Luthier Museum (home to the Hurdy Gurdy). It may also be the case for the Autumn event - to be confirmed. Next Event is 11th and 12th November 2006.
